Clare’s Comics Catalogue – Angelic #2
Previously in Angelic #1 – we met Qora, a girlmonk from a race of winged monkeys in a post-technical apocalyptic future. This inquisitive young creature is disillusioned with the strictures of the community she lives in. Her questioning mind brought her to the attention of the sinister Alfer, the leader of their tribe, who intends to make her his low-wife and strip her of her wings. At the end of issue 1 Qora had just met the Mans, supposed enemies to the Monks.

Now:
Angelic #2 opens with our feisty heroine Qora talking with the Mans. The Mans are Manatees who travel in hovering spherical ships above and below the waves. They “worship” a god called Ay who the Monks see as the devil. This proves to be in interesting meeting and sets Qora on a new path. She also gets a companion in the form of one of the Mans. A surly young thing who thinks all his superiors are embarrassing. The blurb for the issue describes him as a “surly goth”, his markings make him look like he has an emo fringe which made me giggle and think of Kevin the Teenager.
Qora is unconvinced by the Mans until they offer a show of power unlike anything she has seen before.
After establishing their world in issue one, Spurrier and Wijngaard expand upon it, both in terms of the “Lore” and the physical surroundings for Qora and her companions. From the rhyming scriptures that Qora and her fellow monks recite to the destroyed city and the Humbles, each panel and page takes you deeper. And leaves you wanting to know more.
