Watch Fan-O-Rama today!

Cinema Relics Production released their Futurama Fan-film Fan-o-rama today on YouTube. They showcased costumes, models and set pieces at San Diego Comic Con in July. Producer Kody Frederick spoke with us then about this ambitious project.

The film has been in the works for years, beginning with the building of the Planet Express model and makeup tests for Leila. “Its difficult to make a cyclops beautiful,” Frederick says. When asked about trying to achieve accuracy translating an animated series into real life, he admits there were some difficulties. “The interesting thing about Futurama is, if you watch the show in its entirety and try to match, like for example the Planet Express bridge, it is never the same. The backs aren’t the same, the sides are never the same, where they’re sitting is pretty standard, but even then its always deeper or shorter so we just went with a general idea of what it looks like… We went with what we felt was the best representation and what we thought would be most cost effective, essentially.

Fans of Futurama will be thrilled with the attention to detail and accuracy these guys were able to achieve. At the same time, they had fun putting their own stamp on things. “We’re huge sci-fi-fi fans, and we wanted to have an homage to sci-fi in general. We had access to makeup that Rick Baker (Men in Black, Malificent) never used. We wanted to bring that in and we wanted to say, oh look! This guy looks like Spock, he’s gonna be out there dancing, drinking a beer.  We had a woman that looked like Sean Young’s character in Blade Runner, she’s gonna be up there drink a beer. It was just kind of like, let’s do the homage to science fiction and we wanted to make this world feel big.”

Originally conceived as a 6-part web series, the film is now available to watch here:

Frederick says more Fan-o-rama may be in the future. “You’re kinda going to be holding on by the seat of your pants wondering what’s next!”
