Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 reveals more about Hydra Cap

Captain America: Steve Rogers

Warning – Spoilers for Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 below.

Was #SayNoToHydraCap an overreaction? Maybe. Comicbook.com reports that in Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 we get the real story behind Hydra Cap, and its not what we all thought. WARNING- SPOILERS AHEAD!

In May, Marvel fans lost their minds when Issue 1 of Captain America: Steve Rogers hit the stands with a shocking plot twist, our beloved Captain America was indeed a Hydra operative all along. The Say No To Hydra Cap campaign emerged on twitter and tumblr immediately. Nick Spencer successfully turned the comic book world on its head and made himself the most hated man in the land in the process. Offering no reassurances, Mr. Spencer held his own through the backlash.

But here’s what comic book.com tells us about issue 2: (SPOILERS)

Steve’s memories of indoctrination were implanted by Kobik, the sentient Cosmic Cube who became a girl. Not only that, but Kobik has been under the influence of Steve Rogers’ most fearsome archenemies, the Red Skull, for months.

Every comic book fan can breathe easy now! Its not real, its all in his head, and the pristine reputation of our beloved Captain is secure.

Did Nick Spencer deserve all the hate?

Personally, I’d like to thank Nick Spencer for not cracking under the pressure of the reaction and spoiling this reveal. In an interview with Time, he explained it perfectly:

There should be a feeling of horror or unsettledness at the idea that somebody like this can secretly be part of this organization. There are perfectly normal people in the world who you would interact with on a professional level or personal level, and they seem like the salt of the earth but then it turns out they have some horrible secret — whether it’s that they don’t like a certain group of people or have bodies buried in their basement. You should feel uneasy about the fact that everything you know and love about Steve Rogers can be upended.

This storyline was designed to make us feel these feels. Had we known then what we know now, the impact of that first issue would have been lost and we would not have had the opportunity to face and debate important issues that this storyline raised for people.

Will you be picking up your copy of Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 tomorrow now that you know the truth? Tell us in the comments!
