Life hasn’t been easy for Aeley since she arrested her brother, and her role as a political leader leaves her feeling isolated and lonely. Days before her brother’s trial, she meets Lira, a quiet and modest scribe who makes Aeley want more than just a professional relationship.

When she attends the trial and leaves with a marriage contract, Aeley doesn’t know what to do. She must choose one of two brothers, marrying into a family she doesn’t know. Then she discovers that Lira is part of the same family–a sister to Aeley’s suitors and the family’s disgrace. And not at all opposed to an intimate relationship.

Except random acts of violence against her people test Aeley’s ability as a leader, and a web of lies and deceit threaten not only her chance at happiness, but her life…

Do you have any tricks you use to get into the mood to write or do you simply sit down and roll with it?

It all starts with music: I have to have my headphones and iPod/laptop with a well-stocked music library. Once I peg down the music that suits the scene, wrap my head around the images I need to work, and maybe even some particular snippets of dialogue, I’m usually good to go.

Where do you get inspiration for your characters and plot lines?

From everywhere and anywhere, including the random little nooks and crannies in my mind. Sometimes I’m inspired by a photo, story, or something someone said. Much of the time, characters and plot just show up. I liken it to having file folders stuck in my head: whenever I need a story, my subconscious spits out whatever file fits. I’m also deeply inspired by psychology and behaviour, which have fascinated me since I was a kid.

How old were you when you started writing?

Six, almost seven.

If you could collaborate with any famous author, who would it be and why?

One that comes to mind immediately is Sherrilyn Kenyon. I’m in love with The League series: assassins, tortured heroes, crazy antics, dark themes, and romantic encounters. I have a soft spot for all of those. I recognize a bit of my thinking in Sherrilyn’s work, so it’d be hilarious fun to collaborate on something sci fi/fantasy.

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, which one would it be and why?

I admit it: the Doctor from Doctor Who, preferably the Eleventh (David Tenant). I love the idea of visiting different points of space and time, though I could do without getting shot at or locked up… Still, the ability to see the universe in a whole new way is fascinating – new species, glimpses at where we’ve been and where we’ll be, and a crazy amount of discovery. Plus I have a crush on Tenant’s portrayal: fun, hilarious (especially when he corrects himself multiple times in thirty seconds), predictably unpredictable, and has a touch of darkness.

Favorite band/musician?

I have too many! It mostly depends on the genre. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Depeche Mode, but Rammstein, Ace of Base, Enigma, Delerium, Mediaeval Baebes, Tori Amos, and Loreena McKennit also top my list.

Favorite city you’ve visited so far?

Québec City, particularly Vieux-Québec. I love the tiny streets of the old city, the charming bistros and cafés, the Breakneck Stairs, and the lovely view of the river.

A city that you’d like to visit?

Sydney, Australia. Ocean, opera, and opportunities!

Favorite food?

Chocolate

If you had to pick one city to be lost in for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

A fictional one, with plenty of strange characters and weird happenings. But in reality, it’s difficult to say. London, England could be a lot of fun, given its history and the many little things to explore.

Archer

Archer Kay Leah was raised in Ontario, Canada, growing up in a port town at a time when it was starting to become more diverse, both visibly and vocally. Combined with the variety of interests found in Archer’s family and the never-ending need to be creative, it has been this diversity that has inspired Archer’s love of toying with characters and their relationships, exploring new experiences and crazy situations.

Archer started writing stories at age six and became “that kid” with their nose in the books and a pen in their hand, pursuing the challenges of writing novels at age thirteen and conquering the dread of poetry at fifteen. Archer most enjoys writing speculative fiction and is engaged in a very particular love affair with fantasy, especially when it is dark and emotionally charged.

When not reading and writing for work or play, Archer is a geek who has too many hobbies, keeping busy with other creative endeavors, a music addiction, and whatever else comes along, especially if it is in technological form. Archer lives in London, Ontario with a same-sex partner and their cat.

About author(s)

Nikki

I'm a midwest girl in my early 30s with a love of costume jewelry, lattes, and farmers markets. The written word is it for me. I love to craft my own stories, as well as devour those that others have written. Outside of writing and reading, I love film, music, baseball, trying new restaurants, traveling, craft beer, and spending time with my friends and family.
