It’s been four months since seventeen-year-old Livy Cloud lost her younger sister, but she isn’t quite ready to move on with her life — not even close. She’d rather spend her time at the Seattle Children’s hospital, reading to the patients and holding onto memories of the sister who was everything to her and more.

But when she meets the mysterious and illusive Meyer she is drawn into a world of adventure, a world where questions abound.

Is she ready to live life without her sister? Or more importantly, is she brave enough to love again?

In this modern reimagining of Peter Pan, will Livy lose herself to Neverland or will she find what she’s been searching for?

The very first thing I do when I begin a book is create the mood. I can’t start writing until I have the right mood for how the book should feel. It is always my foundation.

For NEVERLAND the mood was created while listening to “Blood” by The Middle East over and over and over again.

When I’m working out the plot or a specific scene I imagine the movie trailer and then put it to music. Insane, I know. The two songs that were used in my fake movie trailer were “Dead Hearts” by Stars and “Rafstraumur” by Sigur Rós. Many times when I would hit a wall I would listen to these songs while driving, staring out the window or cleaning my house. They never failed to motivate me.

Other songs that made the playlist:

“Us Against the World” by Coldplay

“The Loneliness and the Scream” by Frightened Rabbit

The entire We Bought A Zoo soundtrack by Jónsi

And then while I was editing I listened to the entire album Vestiges & Claws by José González on repeat. It soothed me.

Music is a huge part of writing for me. But it can’t be just any music. It has to have this strange mix of momentum, inspiration and feeling. And it can’t be too wordy or I stop writing and just end up listening to the song.

A little secret I must share: If you close your eyes and listen to “Rafstraumur by Sigur Rós you can literally see Meyer and Livy flying. Crazy, right?
