1. What is your favorite genre to read and why?

I love fantasy! Give me paranormal beings in new worlds and I’m a happy bookworm. I’m an escapist at heart and enjoy being transported to another setting and meeting all the fascinating characters. Add magic and interesting creatures and I’m hooked!

2. If you could collaborate with any famous author, who would it be and why?

Anne Bishop. I am in love with her writing. She creates the most compelling characters and amazing worlds. The Black Jewels trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies. She has a new series out and I am in awe of her talent. She’s built a phenomenal world set with shape shifters and vampires and has written them in a way that makes them fresh and new.

3. What’s the wildest idea you’ve ever had for a plot line?

I think most of my plot lines are wild. I feel bad for my characters because I seem to enjoy turning their worlds upside down and having them in as much turmoil as possible.

4. How old were you when you started writing?

I started writing very young but mainly wrote diary entries. I wrote short stories from fourth grade onwards, but never considered writing a book until a few years ago at my friend’s insistence that I should put to paper all the crazy ideas I have.

5. Where do you get inspiration for your characters?

Inspiration is all around me. They are sometimes inspired by a sentence a friend says, or a passing person I meet on the street, or a line in a song. The last time I was inspired to create a character I was having a conversation with a friend. My editor had recommended I change some names in a book I was working on so my friend and I were bouncing names off each other. She mentioned a name and I said it sounded like she belonged in a different type of world. My friend asked what I meant and before I knew it, I had a new world, a set of characters, a plot line, and a book that needed to be written!

6. Do you like to share details of your books with close friends and family, or prefer to keep them a secret until the book is out?

I tend to keep quiet about plot and the direction I’m going with the story until the moment I get stuck and need someone to brainstorm with. I tend to be vague about how I ask my question and see where my friend goes with it. I am inspired by these seemingly random conversations and appreciate them but I find that discussing things too much with people makes me lose direction in my writing.

7. One fun question: If you could only eat one food for the next 30 days, what would it be?

Barbecued chicken without a doubt! How can you go wrong? It always tastes (and smells) delicious!

About author(s)

Nikki

I'm a midwest girl in my early 30s with a love of costume jewelry, lattes, and farmers markets. The written word is it for me. I love to craft my own stories, as well as devour those that others have written. Outside of writing and reading, I love film, music, baseball, trying new restaurants, traveling, craft beer, and spending time with my friends and family.
