Yep, that’s right, Marvel have finally confirmed those casting rumours for 2016’s Dr Strange movie. Sherlock star Cumberbatch will be taking on the role of the titular sorcerer.
Marvel Producer Kevin Feige had this to say “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
While Cumberbatch might be known for roles in dramatic fare such Warhorse, The Imitation Game and 12 Years a Slave, he is no stranger to genre cinema with roles in Star Trek Into Darkness and of course his voice work as the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies under his belt. I think his casting as Dr Strange, a neurosurgeon who discovers magic and alternate dimensions after a serious car accident, is an excellent choice. Roll on November 2016!
It’s worth noting that this casting announcement comes just as some final pick ups are being done on the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, is it possible we might catch a glimpse of Benedict as Dr Strange before his solo movie appears? I guess we will have to wait and see on that front.
