Soundtrack Sunday – Supernatural

Soundtrack Sunday – Supernatural

With two of the FANdemonium team at the Supernatural Convention in Jacksonville Fl this weekend we figured we’d take a stroll through the audio archives for the show. There have been some stone cold classics used over the years. Dean’s love for “mullet rock” brought a whole new generation of fans to the genre. So sit back, rifle through your cassettes and remember – Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole. This is Soundtrack Sunday – Supernatural.

There are so many incredible tracks from season one that it’s hard to choose. From Black Sabbath to UFO, Scorpions to Bad Company, Sam wasn’t kidding when he called Dean’s music the “greatest hits of mullet rock”. My all time fave from season 1 though is the track playing as shifter!Dean flees the house and then tears off the Dean-suit. This is the stellar ‘Hey Man, Nice Shot‘ by Filter.

One of the greatest musical moments from the show is actually an outtake. You know what I’m talking about right? Without any further introduction, here is Jensen Ackles, lip syncing like a badass to Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. Pay close attention at around about the 1 minute mark because this almighty dork ACTUALLY CHANGES CHORDS WHEN PLAYING GUITAR ON HIS LEG!

So this wouldn’t be a Supernatural music post without the song that has become the unofficial anthem of the show. This is Kansas, ‘Carry On Wayward Son‘. You know it, from the opening piano right through to the guitar solo, I doubt there’s a Supernatural fan in the world who doesn’t know every word and sing along at every opportunity!

Season 3 brought a new breed of Paranormal Investigators into the world of Supernatural. With their own theme song no less. Strap in for… GHOSTFACERS!

If you think those voices sound familiar…they are. The Ghostfacers themselves, Travis Wester and AJ Buckley, channelled their inner rock star to make that little theme song.

Supernatural has a whole bunch of hella talented folks on the cast and connected. It’s not for nothing that the cast doing karaoke has become a regular feature at many conventions now. Rob Benedict, aka Chuck, and his brilliant band Louden Swain make appearances at many conventions. Their college/indie rock music has some of the most inventive lyrics I have ever heard. This is Eskimo, from the brilliant album of the same name.

There’s a name that is associated with Supernatural and its music, even years before his music was featured in the show. And for good reason. Jason Manns is one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing live, and he’s buddies with the cast. He’s been a fixture at Supernatural conventions all over, and often takes to the stage with a certain Mr Ackles. They have recorded together too, including a version of the beautiful Crazy Love. In case you’ve never heard this before (where have you BEEN?), that’s Jensen on backing vocals in the chorus and lead on the second verse.

There’s so much great music it would be impossible to cover everything, so I’m sure that we’ve missed loads. Do get in touch and let us know your favourite tracks and maybe we will do another Soundtrack Sunday – Supernatural in the future.
