15 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘The Vampire Diaries’

I love everything about The Vampire Diaries. But I definitely don’t knew everything about The Vampire Diaries. There’s so many fun facts about the show that I’ve just learned about and I had to share ‘em all with you. You’re welcome.

1. The network originally wanted to cast Ashlee Simpson as Elena

I’ll just going to let this sit there. So you can process it.

2. Ashley Tisdale turned down an audition for The Vampire Diaries

Ashlee isn’t the only Ash who was up for Elena — Ms. Tisdale reportedly turned down an audition for the show.

3. James Van Der Beek (aka Dawson Leery) could have been Alaric

WHAT? Is anyone else having a mini-heart attack about this? Don’t get me wrong, I love Van Der Beek in his own unique way (Dawson Leery shout out!), but he would have absolutely not been right for this role…like at all. Luckily, the casting agents smartened up and decided to cast the wonderful Matt Davis instead. Close call, everyone! Now let’s all collectively breathe a sigh of relief.

4. Before TVD, Ian Somerhalder auditioned for HBO’s True Blood

The Vampire Diaries wasn’t the first vampire show Ian Somerhalder auditioned for. Ian auditioned for the role of Jason Stackhouse on HBO’s hit show True Blood but according to him the interview didn’t go so well. Apparently he was so upset about not getting the part that it took him a very long time before he was even able to watch True Blood. Even though he didn’t land the role of Jason Stackhouse, we heard a rumor that Ian’s career ended up ok in the end. Fortunately, he made TVD a whole lot sexier with his presence.

5. Several Actors On The Show Auditioned For The Role Of Damon

It seems that Damon was the role everyone wanted to play on The Vampire Diaries. Zach Roerig who plays Matt Donovan, Michael Trevino who plays Tyler Lockwood and even Paul Wesley who plays Stefan all originally auditioned for the role of Damon. After all of the auditions the crew didn’t quite feel like they found the right fit for the role. Once the casting directors found Ian Somerhalder they decided he was their guy and everything fell into place.

6. Jeremy is older than Elena in real life

On the show, Elena is two years older than Jeremy… but in real life Steven R. McQueen is about 6 months older than Nina Dobrev.

7. Many TVD cast members are bilingual

Nina Dobrev can speak Bulgarian and French, Paul Wesley can speak Polish and Kat Graham knows Spanish, French and Hebrew. Awesome!

8. All episode titles in Season 6 are the names of 90s songs.

We see what you did there, TVD! Every episode in Season 6 is named after a ’90s song… which is appropriate because that’s where Damon and Bonnie got trapped.

9. The Salvatore brothers were almost the Whitmore Brothers

The producers almost changed the name “Salvatore” from the books. But at the last-minute they switched back to their original plans. Phew!

10. Zach Roerig has a daughter in real life

Here’s a secret — Zach Roerig, who plays Matt, has a young daughter! He won full custody of her, which wasn’t too hard considering his kid’s mom is in jail.

11. The set changed locations after the pilot

While the TVD pilot was shot in Vancouver, the Mystic Falls you see today is actually in Covington, Georgia.

12. Stephen Amell Auditioned For A Few Different Roles On The Show

Stephen Amell who currently plays Oliver Queen on CW’s other hit show Arrow once had high hopes that he would be a regular cast member on The Vampire Diaries. Stephen auditioned for the roles of Mason Lockwood and Elijah but was eventually offered a guest spot as a character named Brady who was the werewolf boyfriend of Jules. As you can see here, everything worked out for the best. Could you really imagine anyone else playing Oliver Queen?

13. Neve Campbell Was Almost A Part Of The Cast

Kevin Williamson who has close ties to Neve Campbell from working with her on the Scream films originally wanted Neve to play the role of Isobel Flemming. For whatever reason it just didn’t work out and the role of Isobel was given to Mia Kirshner.

14. Claire Holt and Phoebe Tonkin have worked together before

While their characters, Rebekah and Hayley, may have met in Mystic Falls and become fast BFFs on The Originals in reality these actresses have starred alongside each other on another fantasy series, H20: Just Add Water So I guess I know what you’ll be looking up. (Spoiler alert: they become mermaids, you guys!)

15. Torrey DeVitto, who played Dr. Meredith Fell, previously auditioned for the role of
Elena

What makes this even more interesting is the fact that she was currently dating her future husband, Paul Wesley, at the time of the auditions. I wonder if that had anything to do with her incentive to be his leading lady. But given that they’ve now filed for a divorce, I’d say the casting decision probably worked out for the best.
